What is 4/20?
While there are many rumors that the term 4/20 was derived from song lyrics or a police code for a weed violation, most of the cannabis community has come to the consensus that the term actually originated from a group of friends at a San Rafael, California, high school. One of the friends’ brothers told the group that he planted cannabis in the forest near their school, and that they were welcome to enjoy it—if they could find it.
The friends started a tradition of meeting in front of the school at 4:20 every day to smoke a joint and embark on a search for the mysterious plant. While they never found the weed in the woods, they kept the tradition of meeting up at 4:20 going, and soon, they began to use the term 420 as a code word for weed. The group of friends began to hang out with some members of the Grateful Dead, and shortly thereafter, the term was used in High Times magazine. From there, the moniker became a mainstay in the cannabis community.
